Special Interest in Lymphoedema
At Barker Physio, we have a special interest in the treatment and management of lymphoedema and have developed inhouse skills in the treatment of this condition.
Lymphoedema is an abnormal, long term swelling of parts or parts of the body caused by a collection of lymphatic fluid in the tissues below the skin. It occurs when there is a dysfunction in the lymphatic system.
Exercise Program
When you receive treatment by one of our therapists, you will receive a personalised exercise program that outlines your “homework”. We will email you both a printable version of the exercises (broken down into the stages of the movement) as well as links to videos of the movements so you can see the whole movement done well. You can download your exercise program onto your cell phone for easy reference, and you have the ability to send feedback on how the exercise programme is going.
This exercise program service is our way of helping you stay on course with your post-treatment recovery. Click the button below to see an example.
If you are planning to come see us at Barker Physiotherapists Inc., we would ask you to kindly fill out this patient information sheet prior to your appointment so that we can optimize our time with you.
Visiting a physiotherapist for the first time can be a bit intimidating if you don’t know what to expect. We have therefore written a guide that helps you prepare.
Want to study Physio?
Barker Physiotherapists Inc. is a physiotherapy provider which strives at all times to maintain the highest ethical standards in every aspect of our business. We actively support lifelong learning as espoused by both the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as our regulatory authority and the South African Society of Physiotherapy (SASP) as our professional body.
The basic entry-level requirement for entry into the physiotherapy profession is a 4-year BSc (Physio) degree. It is a requirement of many universities that applicants for this degree have at least 15 hours of clinical experience in a physiotherapy work environment. Barker Physiotherapists Inc. support the profession in this regard, under our “Shadow Day” initiative, and have decided to make the company available to fulfil 5 of the observation hours required for learners from the West Rand.
We will provide experience of Physiotherapy in Private Practice. Learners are encouraged to fill the remaining observation hour requirements in other areas of physiotherapy, including the Public Sector and in Specialised education Prospective students are encouraged to book a slot from 08:00-13:00 where they will “shadow” one or more of the staff of Barker Physiotherapists Inc. to observe the normal workings of private practice physiotherapy.
Prospective students will be exposed to out-patient treatments. This is a professional and privileged environment. It is an ethical and legal requirement that permission (consent to be observed) be obtained from each and every patient that the prospective student observes. Similarly, it is an ethical and legal requirement that prospective students hold themselves to the professional Code of Conduct appropriate to this environment. A copy of the Code of Conduct for the SASP is attached to this document. It should be read and understood prior to attending the “Shadow day”. Prospective students will be required to sign an “Acknowledgement of Reading” document prior to the session beginning, and to hold themselves to this professional standard.
